Communication Chair Hendrix provided a brief summary of the Faculty Senate meeting. Provost Jon Harbor spoke about the need for implementation, bringing the faculty voice to the administration discussions in the critical work ahead, and his commitment to shared governance. The document lists some of the reorganizations (Level I and II proposals expected for review) and a timeline and sequence for faculty comment. ECOS will ask ASCRC and Graduate Council to provide feedback on the Capacity for final staffing levels to sustain curriculum. The Senate review of staffing levels begins on October 26th. Therefore ECOS would like the Level I and Level II proposals to be presented at the November 8th Faculty Senate meeting. This will require an expedited review given there are only 3 ASCRC meetings available for subcommittees to present their consent agendas. Chair Hendrix informed the Senate that it did not pass ASCRC on a unanimous vote. Chair Hendrix opposed the proposal in ASCRC because he does not view computational science as a natural science that deals at the foundational level with exploration of the physical world, as does physics, chemistry, biology, and geosciences for example. Instead, computer sciences provide the means to apply mathematical solutions to the study of processes in the natural, social, economic, and other sciences. Hendrix suggested that expanding proficiency in mathematics and data sciences at the general education level represented a better fit for the proposal by computer sciences, rather than placing the courses into the natural sciences general education category. Travis Wheeler, former member of the General Education Committee who developed the proposal provided some background at the Faculty Senate meeting. He was approached by students and President Bodnar who believed Computer Science should be included in General Education. Ideally, it should be a separate category, but UM already requires more general education credits than other campuses, so this was considered a stop gap measure until a broader transformation of general education could take place. The courses that would qualify would under this change would focus on computing in natural sciences. Chair Hendrix reminded members of the Committees responsibilities: Study of the undergraduate academic standards and curriculum of the University; Communicate academic standards and curriculum policies to students, faculty, and the Administration; Review and recommend action to the Senate for all proposed alterations to the undergraduate academic curriculum; Make recommendations to the Senate regarding undergraduate academic standards and curriculum policies and communicate those standards and policies to students, faculty, and the Administration; Review and make appropriate changes to the University catalog. Subcommittees of ASCRC include the General Education Committee, the Writing Committee, the Curriculum Review Subcommittees and the University Appeals Committee. This year the General Education Committee has been charged with developing a UM Core pilot program. The General Education Committee Chair will be invited to the next ASCRC meeting to provide an update. Chair Hendrix asked members to consider the Vice Chair position. Camie will send a follow-up message that outlines the duties of the Chair and Vice Chair. It has been tradition for the past several years that the ASCRC Chair receives a one semester course buy out. New information disseminated for students about the importance of EXIT INTERVIEWS at orientation and through the financial aid office (Workgroup will meet with Business Services, SARC and Dean of Students to get feedback) New workflow (The Workgroup is planning to meet with Information Technology) Change the catalog language for Withdrawals (Will need to work with Registrar, Business Services, and Financial Aid) for the AY 2018-19 catalog. ASCRC discussed various issues with hardship withdrawal, particularly for students who have been traumatized by sexual assault. The process should ensure that they have an advocate, so it is not necessary for them to tell the story multiple times. SARC is the only campus entity that can provide complete confidentiality. There should be a code for medical withdrawal that does not have a negative impact on the students transcript. Students need to understand the consequence of withdrawal and the process for reinstatement. The Advanced Options Portfolio and Advising Workgroups did not communicate / meet during the last two weeks.
